Emergency Lighting and Your Premises
Emergency signage and lighting are key components of any building or facility. When there’s a power outage, these systems can prevent the loss of life and injury, as well as enable people to evacuate buildings safely and quickly, and provide a safe route for emergency services. They are also a legal requirement for all non-domestic buildings in the UK and need to be serviced annually and well-maintained.
OHEAP Fire and Security have been installing, servicing and maintaining emergency lighting systems to the highest standards for over 60 years. Trust us with your emergency lighting today, and feel 100% confident that you have an emergency lighting system in place to guide people to an emergency exit and a place of safety.

Emergency Lighting FAQs
Can I Test Emergency Lighting Myself?
Testing emergency lighting involves daily visual checks that examine the light for any obvious signs of damage. Organisations should also carry out monthly tests, ensuring that all lights are operational for a short period of time.
How Long Does An Annual Test Take?
For a full test, emergency lighting must remain working for 3 hours. This can be done around your property with minimal disruption.
Why Are Emergency Lights Provided?
Emergency Lights are provided to light the way to safety and assist in an orderly evacuation of a building during an emergency situation. Should the building's power fail, emergency lighting should automatically switch to battery power to continue illumination of escape routes.
How Often Should Emergency Lighting Be Tested?
To remain safe and compliant, a 'flick test' should be performed monthly, and a 'full duration' test should be performed annually. Testing should include backup battery power to ensure illumination during power outages. A full-duration test should use battery power for 3 hours.
What Is the Difference Between Maintained and Non-Maintained Emergency Lights?
Maintained emergency lights function as standard lighting, remaining on all the time, switching to battery backup during a power outage. Non-maintained emergency lights remain off during everyday operation and only illuminate during a power outage.
