What Is a Dry Riser?
A dry riser is an essential firefighting system composed of pipes and valves, specifically designed to supply water to different floors of a building during a fire emergency. Unlike wet risers, which are continuously filled with water, dry risers remain empty until they are connected to a water source by firefighters. This system is particularly advantageous in high-rise buildings, where delivering water from ground level rapidly can be difficult.

Dry Riser Inspection, Testing and Servicing
OHEAP Fire & Security will inspect, test and service your dry riser system, including your dry riser inlet, to ensure it is in full working order in the event of an emergency. Without the correct amount and flow of water, tackling a fire can be difficult, dangerous and often impossible. But a correctly maintained dry riser system can provide critical fire safety cover for high-rise floors.

Common Areas to Install Dry and Wet Risers
In the UK, dry and wet risers are essential firefighting systems installed to provide water at multiple levels of a building. Common installation locations include firefighting shafts, protected escape stairwells, fire lobbies, and adjacent to service corridors.
What Happens if Maintenance is Missed
Neglecting the maintenance of dry risers can have severe consequences, affecting not only property and financial stability but also human lives. Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure that dry riser systems operate effectively during a fire emergency. Skipping maintenance checks can lead to numerous adverse outcomes, each with serious implications.
If there isn’t enough water flow or pressure on high floors, in the event of a fire, it can lead to serious and often tragic consequences. Maintaining a dry riser system is a cost-effective way of ensuring life preservation is possible – make sure your building and its occupants are all fully protected in the event of a fire.

Dry Riser FAQs
What is a dry riser in a building?
A vertical pipe network is installed inside a building to ensure firefighters have easy access to water during an emergency.
Do I need a dry or wet riser?
Whether you require a dry riser or a wet riser will depend on the height and design of your building. In the UK, a building between 18 and 50 meters tall will require a dry riser. If the building is over 50 meters tall, a wet riser will be required.
How often should dry risers be serviced?
A visual inspection is required every six months, and a full pressure (wet) test is required every 12 months, as per British Standards - BS9990:2015. These checks will search for leaks within the system and ensure safe and correct operation in the event of a fire.
What is a dry riser inlet?
A dry riser inlet is an external, ground-level connection to your dry riser system, where firefighters connect a hose to pump water into the empty (dry) system.
