Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher FAQs
What is a wet chemical fire extinguisher?
A wet chemical fire extinguisher is a type of fire extinguisher that is specifically designed to extinguish fires caused by cooking oils and fats. It contains a special chemical agent that reacts with the hot oil or fat to create a soapy foam, which cools and smothers the flames. Wet chemical fire extinguishers are typically identified by their yellow colour and are commonly found in commercial kitchens and other food service areas.
What is a wet chemical fire extinguisher used for?
A wet chemical fire extinguisher is primarily used for extinguishing fires that involve cooking oils, fats, or other organic liquids. It works by creating a barrier between the fuel and the oxygen in the air, thus preventing the fire from spreading. Wet chemical extinguishers are often found in commercial kitchens or areas where cooking takes place.
How does a wet chemical fire extinguisher work?
A wet chemical fire extinguisher works by spraying a solution of potassium acetate onto the fire, which creates a barrier between the fuel and the oxygen, effectively extinguishing the flames. This type of extinguisher is specifically designed for Class F fires, which involve combustible cooking oils and fats commonly found in kitchens. The wet chemical agent also has a cooling effect that helps prevent re-ignition of the fire.
How do you use a wet chemical fire extinguisher?
To use a wet chemical fire extinguisher, you should follow these steps:
Call the fire brigade: Before using any fire extinguisher, it’s important to call the fire brigade to report the fire and ensure that you have the necessary assistance.
Pull the pin: Most wet chem fire extinguishers have a safety pin that prevents accidental discharge. To use the extinguisher, you’ll need to pull the pin at the top of the cylinder to release the pressure.
Aim low: Stand approximately six feet away from the fire and aim the nozzle of the extinguisher at the base of the fire, not the flames.
Squeeze the handle: Firmly squeeze the handle of the fire extinguisher to release the foam.
Sweep back and forth: Sweep the foam over the surface of the fire in a sweeping motion, starting at the base of the fire and working your way up.
Evacuate: If the fire does not go out within a few seconds, evacuate the area and wait for the fire department to arrive.
It’s important to remember that foam fire extinguishers should only be used on Class A and never on electrical fires. Before using a fire extinguisher, it’s also a good idea to assess the situation and make sure that it’s safe to do so. If the fire is too large or spreading too quickly, it’s best to evacuate the building and call the fire brigade.
