Overview

Designed to tackle small fires quickly and safely, the FireShield soft case fire blanket has been manufactured from high-quality fire-resistant woven fibreglass material. A fire blanket works by cutting off the oxygen supply and smothering the fire when laid over the top of a flame. The soft case provides an easy and accessible storage solution for prompt use during an emergency.

To cover most small fire risks, we offer these soft case fire blankets in a variety of sizes, all of which come kitemark certified to BS EN 1869 and backed by a 5-year guarantee. BS EN 1869 is a European Standard which specifies the requirements and test methods for fire blankets intended for use by the general public. This standard covers everything including size, materials, labelling, and packaging.

Fire blankets are commonly used in environments where small fires can occur, such as kitchens, laboratories, and workshops. To use, remove the blanket from the soft case, unfold it, and place it over the fire, ensuring that the flames are fully covered.

An ideal solution for a range of fire emergencies such as:

Kitchen Fires: When a cooking fire arises, these fire blankets can be used to cover the flames to cut off the oxygen supply, preventing the fire from spreading. If it is a small pan fire, wrap the pan in the blanket before removing it from the heat.

Clothing Fires: Should someone’s clothing catch fire, drape the blanket over the person and gently apply pressure to smother the flames safely and quickly.

Electrical Fires: Small electrical appliance fires can also be smothered by a fire blanket, preventing the flames from spreading.

A fire blanket should only be used on small fires and never larger ones. Remember, if the fire grows beyond control, evacuate immediately and call the fire brigade.

Frequently asked questions

A: In the UK, fire blankets are designed and manufactured in accordance with BS EN 1869:2019. This is a European Standard that specifies the requirements for fire blankets used in controlling small fires in both domestic and non-domestic settings.

The BS EN 1869:2019 standards document covers everything from design and construction to performance and labelling of fire blankets. This is put in place to ensure the safety and effectiveness of fire blankets in specific environments. Fire blanket maintenance and storage are also covered within this standard, including the instructions for use and disposal.

Other relevant fire safety standards and regulations should be used in conjunction with this standard, such as building codes and fire safety standards. To ensure the safety of yourself and others, your fire blankets must comply with BE EN 1869:2019 to make sure it is safe and effective in the event of a fire.

A: The difference between a hard case fire blanket and a soft case fire blanket relates to the outer container.

A fire-resistant blanket encased in a hard, sturdy container made of plastic or metal is a hard case fire blanket. Typically used in industrial and commercial settings, the hard case provides reliable protection for the blanket and ensures durability for use in harsh environments.

Should a fire blanket be encased in a soft, flexible cover made of cloth or fabric, this is a soft case fire blanket. As a lightweight and easy-to-carry solution, these types of fire blankets are most commonly found within residential settings or for personal use. They are also more affordable and serve the same purpose of extinguishing small fires as the hard case fire blankets.

The type of fire blanket you need will depend on the kind of environment you will use it in. A harsh environment like a busy kitchen or workshop will benefit from the added protection of the hard case, whereas a less busy, more casual environment will benefit from the soft case.

A: A fire blanket should be used on small fires, such as cooking oils and fats, clothing, and electrical equipment. Larger fires like structural fires are too big for a fire blanket to cover and therefore require a fire extinguisher or the fire brigade.

Using a fire blanket:

•Remove the blanket from the casing.

•Ensure the entire fire is covered by the blanket.

•Using the corners of the blanket, hold it over the fire, ensuring you keep your arms and hands protected from the heat.

•Gently lower the blanket onto the fire to smother the flames and cut off the oxygen supply.

•Once the fire has been extinguished, leave the fire blanket in place and alert the fire brigade.

An important note is that a fire blanket is not designed to be used on people who are on fire. In such a situation, you should use a fire extinguisher or cover the person with a heavy, fire-resistant material like a rug or coat to extinguish the flames.
