Overview

The FireShield 9kg M28 Class D Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher is intended for fires involving combustible metals such as sodium, magnesium and aluminium. These materials behave very differently from ordinary combustible solids or flammable liquids and require a specialist extinguishing agent. Standard water, foam, CO₂ and ABC dry powder extinguishers are not suitable for this type of fire.

Filled with M28 Class D dry powder, this extinguisher is supplied with a low-velocity applicator that allows the extinguishing agent to be applied in a controlled manner. Reducing the discharge speed helps minimise disturbance of burning metal particles or swarf while the powder is being applied, allowing the extinguishing medium to cover the fire more effectively.

The FireShield M28 extinguisher is intended for workshops, laboratories, manufacturing facilities and other workplaces where combustible metals are machined, processed or stored. It should not be used on lithium metal fires, which require an L2 Class D extinguisher specifically formulated for that hazard.

Backed by a five-year warranty, the FireShield 9kg M28 Class D Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher provides dedicated protection for Class D metal fire risks, giving businesses access to a specialist extinguisher where conventional extinguisher types are not appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Fire extinguishers should normally receive a basic service every 12 months. Routine servicing should be carried out by a competent technician in accordance with the recommendations of BS 5306-3. Regular inspections help confirm that the extinguisher remains in good working order and is ready for use if needed.

The correct extinguisher depends on the materials that could be involved in a fire. Each extinguisher type is intended for particular fire classes.

Class A: Fires involving combustible materials such as wood, paper, cardboard and textiles. Suitable extinguisher types include Water, Water Additive, Dry Powder and Wet Chemical.

Class B: Fires involving flammable liquids, including petrol, diesel, oils, paints and solvents. Foam, CO₂ and Dry Powder extinguishers are commonly used.

Class C: Fires involving flammable gases such as propane, butane and LPG. Dry Powder extinguishers are intended for this type of fire.

Class D: Fires involving combustible metals, including magnesium, sodium, aluminium and titanium. These require a specialist Class D extinguisher using the correct extinguishing powder, such as M28, Monnex or L2, depending on the metal involved.

Electrical fires: Fires involving energised electrical equipment. CO₂ and Dry Powder extinguishers are suitable where the equipment remains live.

Class F: Fires involving cooking oils and fats, typically in commercial kitchens. Wet Chemical extinguishers are specifically intended for these applications.
